KIM PERCY - Highly Commended

Working across painting photography, digital imagine augmented reality, video, installation and sculpture. Kim Percy explores themes of social change, such as the impact of climate change on the environment, concerns about forced population migration, and the experience of motherhood. Shot at night on a beach in Thailand, Future Vision, features a woman playing on a swing, yet the image's blurred, highly saturated treatment gives it a dreamlike appeal.

"The best camera is the camera in your hand," says Percy, "and often, that is a smartphone. The quality of the technology adds an eeriness to the photo, which I would not have achieved with a high-end DSUR camera."

The ebb and flow of the emotional toll of daily decision-making is captured in this image as the swing is caught in a state of anxious stasis above an encroaching ocean tide.

"The figure gazing into the dark skies offers a sense of foreboding and despair while the swing is a gentle reflection of childhood memories, remarks judge Brett Mickan. "

The soft focus and clever use of restraint, allows for quiet reflection as the artist offers you a glimpse into her journey."
